During the five-year period preceding the 2010 FIFA World Cup the South African building industry went through an unprecedented period of growth, driven by the roll-out of infrastructural projects that formed part of the World Cup commitments.

During this period Osmond Lange Architects & Planners was lucky to participate in Airport, Sports and Public Transport projects. The appointment for the design and documentation of the King Shaka International Airport (KSIA) in Durban came in late 2006, at a time when professional resources in the country were fully committed and the Government had facilitated the provision of work permits to alleviate the shortage of skills affecting the construction industry and its ability to cope with the FIFA 2010 demands. Osmond Lange’s response included the recruitment of a team of 20 Colombian Architects (3 during the competition phase and 17 during the contract period) to compliment the South African team already deployed for the project.

Life Wilgers Hospital has just unveiled its New Neonatal ICU (NICU) – a spacious, comfortable facility that caters not just for infants, but parents too. 

The time parents spend bonding with their new arrival is precious beyond description —  even more so in the case of a complicated or premature delivery. This very simple yet significant fact is at the core of Life Wilgers Hospital’s new neonatal intensive care unit, which opened in May — a spacious redesign that allows mothers and fathers privacy and comfort as they tend to their newborns.

Pretoria - The new R1.4 billion Thelle Mogoerane Hospital is expected to open its doors to patients in a few months.

In an effort to ensure that the new Thelle Mogoerane Hospital is fully equipped when it opens, the Gauteng Department of Health said it was currently finalising the procurement and installing of medical equipment.

​

Giving an update on the construction progress of the hospital, Gauteng Health MEC, Hope Papo, reported on Tuesday that as at the end of April 2013, 121 951 pieces of equipment have been approved to be ordered. Of these, 83 055 have been processed, 1 638 have been delivered to the hospital and the department is still to order 37 258.

Phase 1 A from Soweto will start service in May. Thabiso Thakali reports.

Imagine catching a city bus at an island station built in the middle of the road. You’d pay a flat fare at an automated machine while you wait, and when the bus arrives, step through the doors and zip through traffic, stopping every 500 metres at a station.

​

That means no taxis, no trucks, no cyclists, no interference whatsoever, because nobody can interfere with that lane. lt is designed and segregated just for the new express buses.

The construction team at the new international airport at La Mercy reported back on site on 5th January 2009 and are the project is back on track and the team is working towards completing the project by the 1st quarter the 2010.

At the end of 2008 a significant milestone was reached when the 55m air traffic control tower cab was raised in record time and now the next milestone is the new bird detection radar system that has been set up on the barn swallow reed bed area at Mt Moreland’s Lake Victoria Conservancy.

Some argue standards of architecture, landscape architecture and engineering will drop with the introduction on a new Built Environment Professions Bill, with one council replacing the existing seven councils controlling these professions, is there cause for concern?

lt seems those who have expressed concern are worried about the political control the Bill allows. They argue the professions had been self-regulating and standards have been ensured by people (mostly volunteers) who have an interest in furthering the professions. They further claim the Bill allows for political agendas to be manifested that could fall outside the best interests of the professions and even the public in extreme cases.

The new R2.3-billion central terminal building at OR Tambo International airport outside Johannesburg opened this week, with passengers now being processed through new international arrivals facilities, which including a more user-friendly customs control process.

​

Once arriving passengers have been processed through customs, they are received into a new international arrivals public concourse, which is two-and-a-half times larger than the previous international arrivals hall.

The Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban is starting to take shape as the city prepares to host the 2010 World Cup.

Progress at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium is moving ahead swiftly as the city prepares to host its share of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

According to Julie-May Ellingson, Head of 2010 Programme, a significant amount of work has been completed in recent months on the more aesthetic elements of the stadium - giving local Durbanites an idea of what their 2010 stadium will look like.

Heineken’s proposed new 3-million-hectolitre brewery is set to be built in the Sedibeng district outside Johannesburg. The brewery estimated to cost about R3bn will be jointly developed by Heineken and international spirits company Diageo. It will be 75% owned by Heineken, with Diageo holding a 25% stake.

Heineken, Diageo and Namibia Breweries, parents of local marketing and distribution company brandhouse, will invest about R4,7bn to build the brewery and form a marketing and distribution joint venture.
